What to Expect in Treatment

Making the decision to attend a residential treatment center for depression, trauma, personality disorders, or addictions is a big step. Learn more about what to expect in treatment.

When you enroll in the residential treatment program at Quest Behavioral Health, you can expect the following to all be major parts of your care:

Many people end up frustrated and on months-long waiting lists to see local psychiatrists. When you come to Quest Behavioral Health, you’ll be connected to our psychiatrist right away, who will meet with you regularly to help you understand the benefits and risks of medications, determine a plan that best fits your needs, and move forward with a regimen that is truly helpful for you. Because many psychiatric medications need to be monitored for a period of time when you’re first starting them, our residential treatment program is the perfect time to find what works best for you.

You’ll be matched with an individual therapist, who will meet with you regularly throughout your stay. Our therapists are Master’s level clinicians who have been trained specifically to work with concerns such as trauma, depression, anxiety, substance use disorders, mood disorders, personality disorders, and psychosis. Several of our therapists also have advanced certifications in various areas of care. Being in a residential program will allow you to meet with your therapist more frequently than in a typical outpatient session, if desired.

In addition to your individual work, you’ll be able to attend multiple therapy groups throughout your stay. These groups address topics such as self care skills, learning how to cope with suicidal thoughts, mindfulness, healthy communication, addiction recovery, coping through art, and physical health education. Group facilitators are primarily Master’s level Clinicians who utilize different modalities, such as Dialectical Behavioral Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, that can help address your underlying problems in a therapeutic group setting.

Many of our patients find that it’s helpful to have their family involved in their recovery, and research has long shown that positive family involvement correlates with higher success in long-term recovery. Family members are encouraged to be a part of the recovery process at Quest Behavioral Health, as long as the patient consents to this. We provide opportunities for family meetings, family and group therapy sessions, and psychoeducational tools that can help families support their loved one.

Case managers are a vital part of the treatment team at Quest Behavioral Health. Your case manager can help you navigate your treatment options during your stay with us, as well as support you with needs you’ll have after discharge. These may include navigating the complex healthcare system and scheduling necessary appointments, helping you find employment support services, looking for options for transitional and affordable housing, and more. As you get closer to completing the residential treatment program, your case manager will work closely with your aftercare planner to ensure that you’re set up for success when you leave. Both your case manager and aftercare planner can be go-to people for your questions about navigating life in recovery.

Length of Stay

Quest Behavioral Health is a rehabilitative residential treatment program, meaning that most of our patients stay at the facility for 30 days. How long you stay in the program within that window depends on a variety of factors, including your unique behavioral health needs, financial and insurance coverage, and other responsibilities you may have outside of treatment. We recommend that all patients stay at least 30 days for a few key reasons.

1) 30+ days in a residential facility allows you to focus on yourself. We all know that life brings plenty of stressors and barriers that can make recovery from mental health concerns or substance use more difficult. When you enroll in our residential program, you’re giving yourself time to truly focus on you, in a supportive and safe environment. Many patients find that they can make significantly more progress in a concentrated program like ours over a short period of time, than by doing outpatient therapy and groups for several months. This is often better for both you and your loved ones.

2) Sometimes, mental health recovery feels worse before it feels better. The reality is that recovery is hard work, even in a safe and supportive environment. By giving yourself 30+ days to focus solely on yourself and your wellbeing, you’re giving yourself time to go through those initial ups and downs, so that you can truly stick with the work and find healing.

3) You get to practice life in recovery. To sustain your recovery, you may have to make significant changes in your daily life, and you will also likely want to practice new coping skills you’ve learned, to help you manage difficult experiences in healthy ways. By participating in a residential program, you have the opportunity to both learn new skills and actually get in the habit of using them. You may have heard that it takes at least 21 days for a new skill to become a habit, and it’s true! By participating in our program for at least 30 days, you’re setting yourself up for success.

What does a typical day look like?

So what does a typical day look like at Quest Behavioral Health? We strive to provide a structured environment for all of our residents. We offer 6 to 8 hours of group therapy throughout the day 7 days a week. This allows our residents to be involved in a therapeutic setting that will give them the highest chance to succeed in the recovery process. Residents will also be assigned a therapist that will meet individually with our residents on a weekly and as needed basis. Your treatment team will help you determine the activities and treatment options that are best for you. Once you and your team have determined the right structure for you, you will have a fairly consistent schedule each day.
